Fireworks Safety Tips

Fireworks are used to brighten up special events and holidays. However, fireworks cause thousands of burns and eye injuries each year. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend public displays conducted by trained professionals.
If you want to use fireworks, proceed with extreme caution and follow these simple safety tips:

  • Purchase fireworks only from licensed vendors.
  • Always read and follow the label directions.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box. Remove them one at a time and close the lid.
  • Check the wind. Place fireworks on a hard surface and incline them to go away from spectators (postpone fireworks if wind is strong). Keep everyone at least 25ft away from the fireworks firing line.
  • People using fireworks must be at least 18 years old.
  • Use fireworks outdoors only.
  • Never set off fireworks during an open burning ban.
  • Never experiment making (and lighting) your own fireworks.
  • Never take fireworks apart or alter them in any way.
  • Light only one firework at a time. Wear eye protection and flame-retardant gloves while lighting fireworks.
  • Light fireworks at arm’s length, then immediately stand back.
  • Never lean over fireworks even when you’re lighting them. Do not pick up a "dud" for at least 30 minutes (and never re-light a "dud" firework).
  • Never allow children to handle fireworks.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never hold a lit firework in your hand.
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • Keep all pets safely indoors.
  • Always have water handy (a running garden hose or bucket). Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in a metal trashcan.

It goes without saying that you should stay away from illegal explosives. “Firecrackers,” missiles and bottle rockets are dangerous and often illegal. Also, although they may appear harmless, sparklers are not safe.  They burn hotter than your cooking oil and cause 16% of fireworks injuries, including third-degree burns.
